POWERHOUSE FOODS FOR PREVENTING PROSTATE CANCER

diet and prostate cancer

It is estimated that there will be over 234,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed this year. With statistics like this, men need as many keys to prevention as they can get. Fortunately, some of the most powerful allies in the fight against this disease can be easily added to your diet.

Beans - Beans rank in the top 20 as being one of the most antioxidant rich foods. This means that they help to prevent free-radical damage - a leading cause of cell mutation. They are also high in fiber, an essential nutrient in helping to flush excess testosterone from the body. On top of this, beans are also a good source of the cancer fighting agents inositol and pentakisphosphate.

Cruciferous Vegetables - Broccoli, cauliflower and kale all contain a potent cancer fighter called sulphoraphane. This phytochemical assists the body in eliminating surplus testosterone - a known risk factor in prostate and other cancers.

Lycopene Rich Foods - Watermelon, tomatoes and pink grapefruit are excellent sources of this powerful cancer fighter. Studies completed at Harvard show that those who regularly consumed foods containing lycopene had a 33% lower risk of prostate cancer.

Pomegranates - Researchers at UCLA discovered that pomegranate juice was effective in reducing PSA levels in men who were treated for prostate cancer. Additional studies at the University of Wisconsin indicate that phytochemicals in the fruit are able to kill the cancer cells.

Yams & Other Orange Foods - These foods are a rich source of beta-carotene - a vitamin which helps to boost the immune system. By keeping your immune system strong, you give your body the ammunition it needs to fight off cancer.

Milk & Meat Alternatives - Two studies from Harvard University found that men were able to reduce their risk of prostate cancer by 25% - 40% by avoiding dairy products.  In addition, several studies have shown a vegetarian or vegan diet to be beneficial in the fight against prostate cancer. The most recent study from the UK found that vegan men had lower levels of IGF-I, a protein known to be linked with prostate cancer.

In addition to adding these healthy foods to your diet, there are other lifestyle changes that you can make to further reduce your risk. A new study from the University of Washington found that regular exercise and stress management are also powerful tools in the fight against prostate cancer.

So go ahead and enjoy these tasty foods, move your body with exercise or a chi exercise machine and learn some relaxation techniques, such as yoga. Not only will your prostate be healthier - the rest of you will feel great too!
