New research from the University of Warwick shows that babies who are massaged cry less and sleep better. Nine separate studies were reviewed by the researchers who found a wide range of benefits linked to infant massage.

According to Angela Underdown to led the team, massage had a positive effect upon the infants’ release of melatonin, a hormone ‘important in aiding infants’ sleeping patterns. The massaged babies also had lower levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol. The results also indicated that these infants required fewer doctors’ visits.

Fortunately, these positive benefits continue throughout our lifetime.  Previous research on adults and massage had proven its stress relieving and immune enhancing properties.
